Discussion about extending the transition period for EN 954-1 creates uncertainty - Pilz recommends the early application of EN ISO 13849-1
The announcement by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) that the transition period for EN 954-1, due to end this year, has been extended to 29.12.2012, has created noticeable confusion among mechanical engineers. It’s a statement that has not been confirmed, as the European Commission, whose agreement is required, will not reach a decision until early December. As a result, pending further notice, the presumption of conformity of EN 954-1 will end as planned on 29.12.2009. As safety experts in automation, Pilz recommends that machine manufacturers and operators do not gamble on an extension of EN 954-1, but instead apply the successor standards EN ISO 13849-1 and EN/IEC 62061 as soon as possible.

Innovative safety for press brakes - New camera-based protection and measuring system from Pilz
The new, camera-based protection and measuring system PSENvip from Pilz uses an innovative optical system to monitor the whole bending process. Instead of a laser light source PSENvip uses an LED-based solution, whereby the receiver simply needs to be illuminated along the upper tool. So the time it takes for initial and subsequent adjustment of the system is reduced to a minimum. When installed on the upper die of the press brake, the PSENvip detects even the smallest foreign body in the protected field between the transmitter and receiver, enabling productive work practices in complete safety. PSENvip also records relevant control data from the bending process: not only is the metal sheet detected, but the bending angle is determined automatically and visualised via the integrated display. A separate angle measurement device is not needed, simplifying operation and reducing costs.
